Medieval Times Party

Want to party like it's 1299? Go back to this magical era and recreate a medieval celebration. Have a royal feast, hold a jousting contest, and drink from goblets!

INVITATION TYPE

  • Snail Mail- You can have a lot of fun making the invitations using paper with browned edges, or even making a scroll.

DECORATIONS

  • When decorating your home, try to picture a medieval castle. Use royal-looking colors like purple and dark red, and if possible, display toy armor and weapons.
  • Light your party with plenty of lanterns and candles.
  • Make a jousting ring- it might not be authentic, but make sure there's plenty of padding!
  • Serve food on metal platters, but give your guests large pieces of pita bread instead of plates. During the Medieval times, people often ate from "trenchers," similar to bread bowls.

FOOD AND DRINK MENU

  • Appetizer: Raw vegetables and baked potatoes.
  • Entrée: Turkey legs- Try this "Renaissance Festival" recipe from Cooks.com
  • Dessert: Medieval Tart
  • Cocktail: Beer and wine- served in large mugs or goblets, of course!

ENTERTAINMENT

  • Play Medieval music in the background.
  • If you and your guests get tired of listening to Medieval chant, check out these movies.
    • "Camelot"
    • "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"
    • "The Lion in the Winter"

GAMES

  • Beer Chess
  • Jousting contest – depending on interest, this could be the main event of the night.
  • "King of the Bean"- Bake a small bean into a loaf of bread. Whoever finds the bean wins a prize. Perhaps you could decorate goblets to give the winners of each event, like a trophy.
  • Tarot card reading- Dress like a gypsy and read tarot cards or palms.

ATTIRE

  • Dress in costume! Choose a character- a king or queen, knight, peasant, gypsy, jester, minstrel, princess, and so on. Check out the Renaissance Store for more ideas.

LAST MINUTE TIPS

Just about everyone who grew up in the New Jersey area took a field trip to Medieval Times at some point in during middle school or high school. The same festivities may be even more enjoyable now that there's something other than soda in your goblet!

And as always, remember to bring your camera!
