Groundhog Day Party

February 2nd is upon us once again, which means that the time has come to turn to that official weather predicting rodent we all know and love, Punxsutawney Phil. Whether you're hoping for an early spring or preparing for six more weeks of winter, we have a few ideas to create your own celebration. And maybe we'll make the trek to Punxsutawney for next year's festivities together.

INVITATION TYPE

DECORATIONS

  • Opt for winter themed decorations, such as blue and silver serve ware, white twinkle lights and lots of snowflakes.
  • Add more warmth and atmosphere to the room by lighting votive candles.
  • Purchase some of these adorable plush groundhogs to have on display and give away as favors.

FOOD AND DRINK MENU

Follow Pennsylvania's Official Groundhog Day 2009 Menu, complete with recipes:

  • Appetizers: Roasted Mushroom Soup, German Apple Brown Bread, Field Greens with Apple Cider Vinaigrette
  • Entrée: Roasted Pennsylvania Pork with Vegetables and Rosemary, and Garlic Mashed Potatoes
  • Dessert: Groundhog Cookies

The recipe yields 72, as in six dozen, cookies. You can find groundhog cookie cutters on Amazon.

  • Cocktail: Groundhog Day Vermouth Cocktail

As seen (over and over and over again) in the movie Groundhog Day – sweet vermouth on the rocks with a lemon twist.

ENTERTAINMENT

  • If you're fortunate enough to live or be in Pennsylvania today, live coverage of the event begins at 6:00 a.m. on the Pennsylvania Cable Network.
  • Watch Groundhog Day starring Bill Murray.
  • Play "I Got You Babe" on repeat for hours to the point you want to electrocute yourself in the bathtub with a toaster (we're kidding).

GAMES

  • Print out some Groundhog Day games on Holiday-Party-Decorations.com, including Word Search and Double Puzzle.
  • If you're truly passionate about groundhogs, work together to become members of the official Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. You even have the opportunity to start your own chapter!

ATTIRE

  • Wear the official hat of Punxsutawney Phil, the black top hat! You can find inexpensive hats at Party Cheap.
  • Dress up in a groundhog costume.
  • If you're hoping for spring, why not go in your favorite springtime outfit? If you're bracing for more winter, bundle up in warm clothes and head to the party.

LAST MINUTE TIPS

If this is going to be an ongoing event for you each year, we suggest building a replica of Phil's tree stump to have on display at your parties.

And as always, remember to bring your camera!
