Veggie Lover’s Party

For every yin there is a yang. This is why we need to balance out yesterday's Meat Lover's party with a detoxifying Veggie Lover's party (and to show love to our vegetarian peeps out there). Perhaps an all vegetable feast does not conjure up the same excitement as the carnal seduction provided by steak, but that just means you may not be creative enough with your food. Lucky for you, we have some fun and tasty menu ideas you are welcome to pass off as your own.

INVITATION TYPE

  DECORATIONS

  • Transform your home into a clean, inviting, and garden-like setting – think fresh flowers and bamboo plants.
  • Use white table linens and if you'd like a hint of romance, light a few candles or small votives.

FOOD AND DRINK MENU

  • Appetizer: Samosas from VegWeb.

This recipe will make you feel like you're having a fabulous deep fried comfort food snack, when in fact you're having a nutritious, oven- grilled vegetable based appetizer.

  • Entrée: Roasted Beet Salad by Martha Stewart , Butternut Squash Lasagna by Giada DeLaurentiis, Sautéed Green Beans, a loaf of your favorite Italian or French bread

This meal is well balanced with plenty of different flavors and the lasagna is so satisfying, you'll hardly miss the meat. We suggest skipping the amaretti cookies in the recipe as they are kind of hard to find and just add unnecessary calories to this meal.

  • Dessert: Fresh fruits

Provide a selection of your favorite sweet fruits. If you want to jazz things up a bit, provide some whipped cream and naturally low fat cookies (such as graham crackers or Nilla wafers) to round out your spread.

  • Cocktail: Jillian Michael's Weight Loss Drink – a simple, detoxifying recipe.

ENTERTAINMENT

  • Songs that honor produce should definitely be on your playlist. Some examples:
    • Tangerine by Led Zeppelin
    • Peaches by the Presidents of the United States of America
    • Strawberry Fields by the Beatles
    • Let's Call the Whole Thing Off (You know, "You say potato, I say potato…")

GAMES

  • Whip out the Wii to get people moving. Try not to embarrass folks with Wii Fit too much, though, as they may have gained three pounds at the Meat Lover's party.
  • Don't have a Wii? Play some good old fashioned charades to get people off their butts and into the action – no extra costs, just some imagination.

ATTIRE

  • Sweats and other workout clothes – both to be comfortable with an expandable waistband, but also to be able to keep active.

CLOSING SUMMARY/LAST MINUTE TIPS

To keep this meal as healthy as possible, avoid artificial sweeteners and diet soft drinks.

And as always, remember to bring your camera!
